Makaila L
Department: Tutors
Position: Tutor
Qualification: Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Chemical Oceanography
Makaila graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Chemical Oceanography. During her undergraduate years she also took part in SEA Semester: a program run by Sea Education Association that includes six weeks of coursework on land followed by six weeks of sailing while conducting oceanographic research. While her undergraduate coursework included a heavy emphasis on Math, Chemistry, and Marine Science she also took numerous classes through URI’s Education Department. Her intention has been to gain field experience prior to pursuing a teaching certificate.
Makaila spent four years post-graduation working for Scripps Institute of Oceanography in a Marine Chemistry Lab. While employed by SIO she cultivated her love for teaching, be it taking part in community outreach opportunities, running training programs, or tutoring. Tutoring has been a significant part of Makaila’s life, as far back as high school. She worked with a few friends to coordinate the tutoring program at her high school, and during her undergraduate years ran Math help sessions (Basic Math-Calculus 3), tutored and was a Teacher’s Assistant for General Chemistry, and provided tutoring assistance for an English/Reading student at the local community college. Since graduation she has tutored students in Algebra I and II, as well as Chemistry. She is available to tutor in K-12 Math and Science, as well as K-8 English and Reading.
Having recently moved to Monterey with her husband (a student at Naval Postgraduate School) Makaila enjoys exploring the area, cycling, reading, and spending time with her two dogs.
